emotion 2024

stop motion animation projected on motored mobile, acetate prints, oil on paper, red thread.
50 x 50 x 200cm

Inspired by the multiple versions of Lucian Freud and Marc Balakjian’s
prints displayed in the V&A, as well as Lucian Freud’s understanding of
etching as a continuation of his drawing practice, in this piece I sought
to dissect a figure drawing I had previously created. Combining lithographic, intaglio, laser etching, riso, and inkjet printing processes, I created eight different prints to be read in conversation with one another.

I chose to display my prints on a branch I sourced locally during a tree trimming. Joining the image of the nude body with the rawand rotting material of the wood, I challenge ideas around what should and should not be presented as indoor decoration. Drawing inspiration from David Nash’s treatment of wood in his Ladder series, I choose to leave the branch untreated. Like many of my pieces, this work is temporary due to the unstable materials I use (wood and tracing paper), and will thus change with time.
